On Friday, August 13, 2010, at approximately 4:20 PM, 30 to 35 Hispanic Males entered the Benson BB&T branch on East Main Street, and presented payroll checks allegedly issued by a local business. 28 of these checks were cashed at BB&T Bank, and unsuccesful attempts were made at at least two additional locations.

The checks were printed on legitimate check stock, and had the correct routing and account numbers issued to the business. They also bore a scanned signature of the employee who normally signed the payroll checks.

An amount in excess of $10,000 was received, as a result of this scam. The investigation into this incident is continuing, and any and all assistance from the public will be appreciated. A reward is being offered in this case, for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the responsible parties. Investigators may be contacted by email, or by telephone at 919-894-2091, and anonymous information may also be submitted to crimeline@bensonpd.org .
